Coffee (Coffea arabica) – Yemen is the birthplace of coffee, having produced it continuously for hundreds of years. Yemeni coffee is richly varied based on local terroir, from the mountains of Haraz north of the capital, Sanaa, to the rolling hills of ‘Ibb further south. Unfortunately, Yemen’s role as a global coffee producer has been diminished over the years due to instability and the spread of qat. Nevertheless, we at Adam Hale Est. are committed to helping Yemen regain its rightful place as a world-renowned coffee producer.
Millions of people around the world invoke Yemen’s coffee producing history every day when they order a mocha. Far from today’s connotation of coffee flavored with chocolate, al-Mukha is actually a port city on Yemen’s Red Sea coast which from the 16th to 18th centuries was the main coffee export hub. Thereafter, coffee cultivation spread across the Red Sea to Ethiopia and Kenya, adn Spanish colonialists established large plantations in South America, thereby diminishing Yemen’s prominence in the coffee trade.
Yemeni coffee is processed via the dry method, whereby freshly picked coffee cherries are spread under the gentle rays of the Arabian sun until the moisture content reaches appropriate levels. In addition to honoring the traditional means of coffee production, this method is more ecologically sustainable, as it does not waste the massive quantities of water of the wet method. The beans are then hulled, polished and packaged into sacks, where they are exported globally to the finest craft coffee brewers.
